Ilona’s experience spans 16 years and several countries and exemplifies her out of the box thinking. After participating in a few international arbitrations as an attorney with Law Office Tark & Co she did a PhD in Cambridge University on viability of commercial B2B litigation. She then decided to see deal-making and contractual negotiations from the industry side, so she joined Accenture PlC in London (IT sector). From there she was hired away to the Estonian NASDAQ OMX listed subsidiary of United Utilities, where she became a C-level manager. Having seen such inefficiencies of adjudicative dispute resolution forms (litigation and even arbitration) like damage to the parties’ long-term business relationship and depleting parties’ time, money and control over the resolution, Ilona has chosen commercial mediation to help clients confidentially and efficiently to resolve existing disputes and prevent future ones. This often involves taking stock and summarising contractual, regulatory, financial and other complex commercial issues into topics warranting a mutual resolution. Occasionally a save face solution needs to be devised when one of the parties has made a

(publicised) decision that is difficult to backtrack from. Ilona’s background of being part of Accenture’s Market Maker (negotiation and

sales) team and experience in conducting due diligences as well as participating in complex M&As and syndicated loans lends a hand in simplifying complex problems. Her influencing skills when dealing with difficult people and her experience with liaising with public officials means she is sensitive and patient in understanding parties’ real needs in order to help clients towards solutions that work.

Ilona also counsels and trains clients on how to prepare for and conduct effective principled (interests-based) negotiations, which includes profiling of social styles to help clients devise a more effective negotiation approach.
